Tech Nation Route 2026: Tech Nation was reappointed as the UK digital tech endorsing body in May 2025. Here's what changed and who endorses now.
There has been persistent confusion about whether the "Tech Nation route" still exists. It matters now because founders, engineers and AI specialists planning a UK move need certainty on who assesses them — and on the settlement timelines being reshaped in 2026. The Tech Nation Route 2026 is intact, but the paperwork, the design pathway and the settlement backdrop have all shifted this year.
No. The uncertainty traces back to 2023.
On 31 January 2023, Tech Nation announced that it would cease all operations on 31 March 2023 after the UK government pulled key funding, awarding it instead to Barclays' tech incubator Eagle Labs.
The organisation was then acquired by Founders Forum Group and kept operating.
The decisive resolution came in 2025.
On 27 May 2025, Tech Nation announced that it will continue to be the endorsing body for the Global Talent Visa in Digital Technology route for the next 3 years.
Tech Nation won the £11m tender that was published in October 2024 after UKVI conducted extensive market testing since December 2023.
So the "replacement" that many anticipated never arrived — Tech Nation reappointed itself, in effect, through open procurement.
Following an open procurement process, the Home Office awarded Tech Nation the contract to act as endorsing body for the digital technology pathway. The contract commenced in April 2025 and runs for three years, with the option to extend. This reappointment removes previous uncertainty about the future of digital technology endorsements and provides stability for applicants.

The Home Office will send your application to be reviewed by Tech Nation, a UK organisation ('endorsing body') with expertise in your field. You will usually get a decision about your endorsement within 5 to 8 weeks.
The single meaningful procedural change this year was the removal of the duplicate form.
Prior to 4 August 2025, applicants were required to complete two forms: the "Global Talent endorsement – Stage 1" form on GOV.UK and a separate Tech Nation application form. From 4 August 2025, applicants only need to complete the GOV.UK Stage 1 form. The separate Tech Nation form has been withdrawn, replaced by an expanded version of the Home Office form to capture relevant information for the digital technology pathway.
This matters more than it sounds.
This should remove one of the most common causes of application errors, where candidates previously submitted only one of the two required forms, leading to automatic rejection.
Tech Nation endorses applicants working in digital technology, including software engineering, AI and machine learning, data science, fintech, cybersecurity, and related fields. This covers both technical professionals and founders.
Applicants apply under one of two categories.
Exceptional Talent is for applicants who are already recognised as leaders in digital technology — typically with at least five years of senior experience, a demonstrable track record of impact, and international recognition. Exceptional Promise is for earlier-career applicants with five years or less of relevant experience who show clear potential to become leaders.

To be considered for entry under the Global Talent visa, applicants must normally seek endorsement from one of six endorsing bodies engaged by the UK Home Office.
The newest addition is design:
the new Design Industry endorsement pathway gives design its own framework under Appendix Global Talent from 1 July 2026.

It costs £766 to apply. If you're including your partner or children in your application, they'll each need to pay £766. You'll also have to pay the healthcare surcharge as part of your application — this is usually £1,035 per year for each person applying.

Global Talent ILR is the SET(O) application, costing £3,226 per person from 8 April 2026, plus a £19.20 biometric fee. There is no Immigration Health Surcharge on settlement.

Exceptional Talent applicants and those endorsed through the main science and research endorsing bodies may qualify for ILR after 3 years. Exceptional Promise applicants endorsed by Arts Council England or Tech Nation usually qualify after 5 years.
Crucially, the 2026 settlement overhaul preserves this.
These increased baselines will not apply to individuals holding permission under the EU Settlement Scheme, family members of British Citizens, and British National (Overseas) visa holders. Further, accelerated pathways will be retained for the Global Talent and Innovator Founder routes, allowing for settlement after three years.
The wider context:
the UK government published a policy document on 20 November 2025 outlining its intention to move to an "earned settlement" system whereby the baseline residence period for settlement for most migrants will be increased to 10 years from the current five years.
There is no salary threshold at ILR, but there is an earnings-linkage test.
A core requirement for ILR is demonstrating that you have earned money in the UK linked to your area of expertise during your most recent grant of leave. There is no minimum income threshold — but the evidence must be credible and verifiable.
Continuous residence rules also apply:
to qualify for ILR, you must not exceed 180 days outside the UK in any rolling 12-month period.
