Planning to study in the UK 2027 has become a question of timing as much as grades. Two confirmed rule changes — a higher proof-of-funds threshold from 30 November 2026 and a shorter post-study work route from 1 January 2027 — directly affect what you must prove and how long you can stay afterwards. For families weighing a three-year degree or a one-year master's, a few weeks either side of those dates can change the maths materially.
A UK degree remains one of the fastest routes to a globally recognised qualification: most bachelor's degrees take three years (four in Scotland) and most taught master's just one. Shorter degrees mean lower total tuition and living costs than comparable systems. UK qualifications are widely accepted by employers and universities worldwide, and strong institutions sit well beyond London — in Sheffield, Birmingham, Manchester, Chester and dozens of other cities with a lower cost of living.
The best study plan is written backwards — from the career and the visa you want, not forwards from a prospectus.

That said, the post-study landscape is tightening.
The reduction of the Graduate route, confirmed in a Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules laid before Parliament on 14 October 2025, reflects the government's aim to encourage graduates to transition more quickly into skilled employment or sponsored visa routes.
For a one-year master's starting September 2027, that means the whole plan — course, city, first job — should be built with the Skilled Worker switch in mind from day one.
International undergraduate tuition starts at around £15,000 a year and passes £30,000 at research-intensive universities. For 2026/27, the University of Chester charges £14,950 a year, while the University of Sheffield charges roughly £25,000–£32,100 depending on the course. On top of tuition, the visa requires you to prove living costs — and that figure is rising.
| Cost item | Amount (2027 entry) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition fees | £15,000–£32,000+ per year | Varies by university and subject; medicine and lab-based courses cost more |
| Living costs to prove (outside London), from 30 Nov 2026 | £1,203/month, up to 9 months (£10,827) | Held for 28 consecutive days; was £1,171/£10,539 |
| Living costs to prove (London), from 30 Nov 2026 | £1,570/month, up to 9 months (£14,130) | Held for 28 consecutive days; was £1,529/£13,761 |
| Student visa application fee | £558 | Applying from outside the UK; in effect from 8 April 2026 |
| Immigration Health Surcharge | £776 per year of the visa | Paid upfront with the application; standard adult rate is £1,035 |
| University accommodation | From about £150/week | e.g. £151.41/week for a self-catered Sheffield room with shared bathroom |

The visa figures are the minimum you must prove, not what you will actually spend.
If you make your application on or after 30 November 2026, you will normally need living-cost funds of £1,570 for each month of study in London or £1,203 for each month outside London, subject to a maximum of nine months; applications before that date use £1,529 or £1,171 per month.
Rent, food, transport and phone in most UK cities come to more than the visa minimum — in London, considerably more.
Your route depends on your school certificate, grades and English level.
| Route | Who it suits | Typical length |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's (direct entry) | School certificate meets UK requirements, or A-levels/IB | 3 years (4 in Scotland) |
| International Foundation Year | School system ends a year earlier, or a bridge in grades/English | 1 year, then a 3-year degree |
| Master's (taught) | Bachelor's graduates specialising or switching field | 1 year |
| Pre-sessional English | Students close to the required IELTS score | 6–12 weeks before the course |
In many CIS countries an 11-year school certificate does not meet direct-entry requirements alone, so a Foundation Year or a year of local university study is common. Entry rules differ by university — this is precisely where a personal assessment saves months.
To obtain a Student visa you need five things in place:
1. An unconditional offer from a licensed student sponsor (a UK university) and a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).
2. Proof of English — usually an IELTS for UKVI score, or a test your university accepts.
3. Proof of money for tuition still owed plus living costs (the 30 November 2026 figures above), held for at least 28 days in a row, on a statement ending within 31 days of applying.
4. The visa fee and health surcharge: £558 plus £776 for each year of the visa.
5. For most undergraduate and taught master's students, no dependants — research degrees (PhD and research master's) are the main exception, a rule in force since January 2024.
You can apply up to six months before your course starts if you are outside the UK, and a decision usually takes about three weeks. One figure families often underestimate is the IHS.
The bigger cost is the Immigration Health Surcharge at £776 per year of your visa; for a one-year master's, the visa is typically issued for around 16 months (course plus buffer), so you pay for two full years — £1,552.

The main equal-consideration deadline is 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time, while Oxford, Cambridge and most courses in medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine have an earlier deadline of 15 October 2026 at 18:00.
Applications after 13 January are still possible, but universities no longer have to give them equal consideration, and popular courses fill up. Postgraduate applications go directly to each university and often stay open until summer, though competitive courses close earlier.
This is the single change that reshapes the medium-term plan.
Students completing bachelor's or master's degrees are currently eligible for a Graduate visa for two years after completing their course; this is to be reduced to 18 months for all applicants applying on or after 1 January 2027, while PhD students will continue to qualify for three years as before.
The application date — not your course dates — decides which duration applies.
As Muzaffar Saydiganiev, Managing Director at VisaTier and author of this guide, notes: "For a September 2027 master's intake graduating in late 2027, the Graduate application will fall after 1 January 2027 — so 18 months is the realistic planning number, and the Skilled Worker switch has to be mapped before arrival, not after."
The Graduate Route visa costs £937, plus £1,035 per year for the Immigration Health Surcharge, separate from and in addition to what you paid for your original Student visa.
Crucially, Student and Graduate visas are not settlement routes — time on them does not lead to permanent residence by itself. To stay longer, most graduates switch to a Skilled Worker visa with a sponsoring employer, which can lead to indefinite leave to remain and, later, British citizenship.
If long-term UK settlement is the real objective, it is worth understanding how the clock works before you commit. Our analysis of the ten-year route to indefinite leave to remain explains why the degree-to-settlement path rewards early planning. For exceptional students and researchers, there are also faster, sponsor-free alternatives worth checking against your profile — our breakdown of the academic endorsement routes to ILR in three years covers who qualifies. If you are unsure which pathway fits your grades, field and budget, our diagnostic maps the options in one view.
Rankings are only one input. In VisaTier's casework, our advisers consistently weigh five factors:
