Most founders choose a visa first and test their business against it afterwards. That order is expensive: an endorsement refusal costs months, and the three main founder routes into Europe judge very different things. A proper founder visa assessment reverses the sequence — it starts with you and your company, then measures them against each route. Here is what each route looks for, why a single "eligible / not eligible" answer is never enough, and how to get a route-by-route readiness score for free.
Because the expensive mistakes happen before the form is ever submitted. A founder who applies to the wrong route — or to the right route with an unproven business — usually learns it from an endorsing body's refusal, after paying for a business plan, a market study and advisers.
An assessment flips that order. It begins from your profile and your business, tests both against each route's published criteria, and shows where the case is strong, where it is thin, and what would change the answer. The point is not to flatter you with a "yes"; it is to tell you where you genuinely stand.
The visa is the entrance. Settlement is the finish — plan for both on day one.

In VisaTier's casework, our advisers consistently see founders who could have qualified for a stronger route had they tested it first, instead of defaulting to the best-known one.
All three let you build your own company rather than work for a sponsor, but they weigh the founder and the business differently. The table below is directional — confirm live figures on each official source before you commit.
| Route | Who decides on the business | Minimum investment | Language | Settlement path | Total estimated cost (single applicant) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| UK Innovator Founder | A Home Office–approved endorsing body | None fixed since 2023; plan must be credibly funded | English at B2 | Settlement after 3 years, subject to endorsement criteria | From c. £5,000–£10,000 incl. fee, health surcharge and endorsement; verify on GOV.UK |
| Isle of Man | Isle of Man immigration, own business criteria | Real starting-capital minimum; source-of-funds check | English at B2 | Island-specific settlement rules | Capital threshold plus advisory; verify on gov.im |
| France (Talent Passport) | French authorities; project recognition for innovative routes | Depends on the specific Talent Passport category | No French requirement for founder routes | Multi-year Talent Passport, renewable | Category-dependent; verify on the French consular service |

The UK route is the best-known, and our guide to the full list of UK Innovator Founder endorsing bodies shows exactly who will assess your business. For the island alternative, see how the Isle of Man reset its immigration rules in 2026.
A useful assessment looks at the founder and the business separately, because routes weight them differently:
1. You as a founder — experience, skills and your real, demonstrable role in running the company.
2. The business idea — whether it is genuinely new for the market it targets.
3. Viability and market — customers, evidence of demand and a credible revenue model.
4. Capital and source of funds — how much you can deploy, when, and whether you can evidence where it came from.
5. Language and practical requirements — thresholds that act as hard cut-offs on some routes.
6. The long game — whether the business can meet the milestones that matter for settlement.
A single "eligible" answer hides all of this. A readiness score per route, with the reasons behind it, shows which door is closest and what to fix first.
For many founders this is the decisive question. The UK Innovator Founder route is distinctive because settlement can follow after 3 years in the UK — subject to meeting the endorsement criteria at the contact point reviews — whereas the French Talent Passport builds through renewable multi-year permits and the Isle of Man applies its own island-specific timeline.
That three-year horizon is attractive, but it is earned, not automatic. Innovator Founders face scrutiny at defined intervals; our breakdown of the 12- and 24-month contact point meetings explains what the endorsing body expects to see at each stage. Settlement rules are also under reform, so confirm the current ILR qualifying period on GOV.UK before you plan around it.
Route Match is the free first step of the VisaTier process:
Scores are diagnostic, not predictive. VisaTier does not guarantee endorsement, visa or investment outcomes — the point is to know where you stand before you spend. If you want a human read on the output, our structured diagnostic turns the score into a sequenced plan.
The score becomes a plan. Founders without a validated idea yet can explore directions matched to their experience and capital; those with an idea move to validation and endorsement preparation. After a visa is granted, the work continues — UK founders face contact point meetings at 12 and 24 months, and settlement rules are shifting.
Because settlement is the real prize, it pays to understand the bigger picture of where these rules are heading; our analysis of the UK's earned settlement reform sets out what the ten-year direction means for founders counting on a three-year route.
